MySkills
City of Glasgow College
Digital Learning
The My Skills project is investigating how to move the certification of vocational education forwards from its current paper-based model to a system that also uses official digital certificates in a reliable, trusted and verifiable manner, operating at a national scale over the long-term.
The aim of the best practice was to investigate using a technology to support student portfolios, providing the student with trusted evidence to give to employers during the job application stage. Having an online system which can be accessed at any time was more time effective as the system would automatically verify the students SQA qualifications and overall speeding up the application process.
The technology that was used is Google G Suite for education, this software was chosen over other available technologies as it is free to use and the students are already familiar with the technology. Another benefit of this software is that it allows students to transfer content from one account to another allowing them to store the evidence from their learning in the G suite account and then take that evidence with them once they leaved the college.
The benefit to the college was being able to explore block chain technology and understand more how it works and can be used. It allowed us to bring google g suite for education into the college to test and evaluate how it can be used and how the students respond to it.
The main resource needed was funding which was received from UFI Trust and human resource to investigate and develop the portfolio system. The main tip to anyone looking to do the same thing would be to ensure that each partner is aware of what the outcomes are and at what stage each one should be completed at.
